At seventy-nine, retired court clerk Hildegard Bergmann trades her quiet widowhood for a room at Sonnenhang - the 'Sunnyside' retirement home above Feldbach. She means to settle in gently. But when she learns that Anton Vogel died 'peacefully in his sleep' in room seven only days before her arrival, an old instinct stirs: in thirty-four years at the district court she learned that the tidiest explanations are often the ones worth questioning. Between coffee in the conservatory, well-meaning carers and neighbours with secrets, Hildegard begins, quietly and stubbornly, to investigate. The first case in the cosy Mrs Bergmann Investigates series - a warm, sharp-witted mystery about growing old, paying attention, and refusing to look away.
