The law is simple: when a king finds his Heartbound, he must kill her before the bond is complete.
King Kael Draven has known that law his entire life.
Elara Vale has never even heard of it.
For twenty-seven years, Elara believed the golden crescent beneath her collarbone was nothing more than a birthmark. Then it awakens—and soldiers from the hidden kingdom of Valthera arrive at her door.
Taken across the Veil and brought before a king whose mark answers her own, Elara discovers an impossible truth: she is Kael's Heartbound, the woman magically destined to share his power.
And according to three hundred years of royal law, she must die.
Kael has spent years preparing for the possibility that this day would come. But the woman standing before him is nothing like the threat history promised. She is stubborn, fearless, infuriating—and increasingly impossible for him to stay away from.
As their forbidden bond grows stronger, Elara begins uncovering secrets buried deep beneath the Crown. The infamous Heartbound queen who supposedly destroyed Valthera may have been innocent. The law demanding Elara's death may have been built on a lie. And something ancient beneath the kingdom has been waiting centuries for the Heartbound to return.
Now Kael must choose between the Crown he was born to protect and the woman he was taught to kill.
But Elara is done letting kings decide her fate.
