This book explores a question that has long occupied my thoughts: What happens to our idealism when it collides with reality? Sarah Wyss, the story’s protagonist, stands at the beginning of her career, filled with hope and scientific ambition. She is set to command the spaceship *ISS Flutwelle Brugg*—an honor that carries immense responsibility. Her mission is to explore the mysteries of the universe, discover new worlds, and perhaps even advance humanity. Yet, as soon becomes apparent, the universe cares little for our good intentions.

By her side is a crew drawn from diverse cultures and worlds: Kaelen, a pragmatic Xylosian whose perspective on problems often directly conflicts with Sarah’s idealistic approach; Phatok, an Acerbusian security chief from a race that views aggression as a virtue; Jax, a brilliant engineer who feels lost in social situations; and Hummel, a French Bulldog who sometimes radiates more wisdom than all the others combined. This unconventional family will venture into unexplored regions of the galaxy, where the rules of the known world no longer apply. What follows is a story about the limits of diplomacy, about moral choices with no right answer, and about the price that peace and knowledge sometimes exact. It is a story of a young scientist learning that leadership means not only making the right decision—but often making the wrong one and living with the consequences. The journey through the stars is not easy. But perhaps that is precisely why it is worth taking.
