Description & Overview

Easy Summary- The Elephant’s Secret Journey

Amara is a twelve-year-old girl who adores animals, mainly elephants. At Mavuno Wildlife Reserve, her aunt, Dr. Nia Kamau, works as a doctor. A lot of the time, she tells Amara that elephants remember things very well. They remember past elephants, old tracks, and watering holes from many years ago.
Amara goes to the reserve one summer. She sees a lot of wild animals, like elephants, zebras, and giraffes. She is interested in a young elephant named Kito. His tusk is short, and he has a pale scar on his front leg. He now lives with a safe herd because he was separated from his family during a drought.
Kito does something strange all the time. He often stops to eat and looks west toward the hills. He will sometimes touch the ground or raise his trunk into the wind before walking west. The guards think he's just interested, but Amara thinks Kito already knows where he wants to go.
Soon, Amara finds an old map that shows a path that elephants used to travel in the past that went past the western hills. Kito gets away and follows this old path after a strong storm damages the reserve fence.
Aunt Nia, Amara, and the conservation team are very careful to follow him. They follow the path to an old valley with a dry water hole. They learn that elephants used to go there to get water and that Kito had been there when he was younger.
Amara knows that Kito thought back to the place where he grew up and the trips he took with his family.
Amara learns an important lesson about protecting the environment from the story. It's not enough to just keep animals in safe reserves to protect them. Animals also need food, drink, family, space, and safe ways to get around.
Amara also learns that people and animals need to be gentle with each other on the land. The most important thing she learns is that animals have their own stories that they carry with them through memory, family ties, and their footsteps.
Kito remembered a road that people had forgotten about.
