Gilbert Glossin, newly installed as Laird of Ellangowan, is determined to turn his doubtful rise into real power, even as the county gentry despise his low birth and the common people deny him respect. When Colonel Mannering's house is attacked and Charles Hazlewood is wounded, Glossin sees his chance to prove himself as a magistrate, outshine the honorable Mac-Morlan, and win favor with the local elite by hunting down the culprit. His search leads him to the Gordon Arms, where he spars with the sharp-witted Mrs. Mac-Candlish, uncovers clues about a mysterious traveler named Brown, and gathers contradictory testimony about the stranger's behavior on the ice and his unsettling interest in Miss Julia Mannering and Miss Lucy Bertram. Glossin's investigation becomes more urgent when Mac-Guffog brings in a prisoner, and the justice stages a theatrical interrogation that exposes both his vanity and his anxiety. The captive proves to be the notorious Dirk Hatteraick, whose revelations about the missing boy send Glossin into panic and force him into a corrupt bargain. Meanwhile, Bertram is thrust into a foul prison world of extortion, shabby cells, and grotesque fees, where even basic comfort depends on payment and his only reading is the Newgate Calendar. Darkly comic and sharply satirical, the tale reveals a society ruled by greed, coercion, and uneasy power. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
