It was written to keep the exiles sane — to remind them that the impressive-looking systems around them were hollow, that the gold-covered idols could not speak, could not move, could not save.
Today’s idols have user interfaces.
They can speak — algorithmically. They can move — at the speed of fibre optics.

They still cannot save.
