A Pickle for the Knowing Ones is the famously eccentric work of American businessman Timothy Dexter, first published in the early nineteenth century. Written with unconventional spelling, grammar, and almost no punctuation, the book combines autobiography, social commentary, personal boasts, observations, and unusual reflections on politics, religion, business, and society. Dexter’s unpredictable style and extraordinary personality make the work both humorous and historically fascinating. Later editions even included pages of punctuation marks for readers to place wherever they wished. A remarkable example of unconventional American writing, the book remains a curious portrait of individuality, ambition, vanity, and early American culture.
