Description & Overview

How much can one witness’s word carry when a man’s life depends upon it?

In May 1985, fourteen-year-old Shelly Boggio was murdered in Florida, leaving her family with a loss no verdict could repair. Jack Pearcy and James Dailey were convicted. Pearcy received life imprisonment; Dailey was sentenced to death. Yet conflicting accounts, the absence of physical evidence directly connecting Dailey to the location and unresolved questions about the investigation continued to challenge the certainty of the verdict.

The prosecution’s most consequential witness was Paul Skalnik, a jailhouse informant who claimed Dailey confessed to him. His testimony supplied the case with the words investigators needed, but his history of deception, cooperation with authorities and possible expectations of favourable treatment raised serious questions about why he came forward and whether he could be trusted.

Drawing upon court proceedings, investigative records and evidence that emerged after the trial, THE WITNESS THEY NEEDED examines Shelly’s final hours, the case built in her name and the human cost of a conviction that remains contested. It neither declares innocence nor treats a verdict as beyond scrutiny. Instead, it asks the question at the heart of this gripping investigation: what happens when the witness the justice system needs most may be the witness whose story deserves the greatest doubt?
