You notice something wrong in your community and think, someone should do something about that. This book is about becoming the someone.
Reclaiming the Power of Ordinary People is a practical, step-by-step system for civic action, written for people with no background in politics or organizing. Across fifteen chapters, it walks you through the full arc: finding an issue specific enough to act on, mapping who actually holds the power over it, building a small circle of allies through direct and specific asks, showing up prepared at public meetings, writing advocacy messages that actually get read, protecting your own and your neighbors' ability to vote, and telling your story so it travels beyond your immediate circle.
It doesn't stop at the first win. Later chapters cover what most guides skip: working alongside people you don't fully agree with, handling real opposition and conflict, avoiding burnout, staying ready through slow stretches when nothing seems to be moving, and building the next circle of people who will carry the work forward after you.
Every chapter follows the same practical shape: a real-feeling scene, a plain-language concept, the research behind it, a concrete exercise, and a close that connects it to your larger effort. Four appendices add a quick-reference summary, twelve fillable worksheets and templates, worked examples showing each tool completed, and a 90-day starter plan.
This is not a partisan manifesto, and it will not tell you what to believe. It is a toolkit for acting effectively once you've decided. The skills in these pages, showing up, asking directly, speaking clearly, staying in it, belong to no single party or cause. They are simply how ordinary people have always moved things that seemed too big to move.
