Captain Boldheart storms through this exuberant Dickensian holiday romp as a gloriously overblown child pirate, outraged by a Latin-Grammar Master and determined to avenge himself at sea. Commanding the schooner Beauty with absurdly strict discipline and theatrical bravado, he wages mock-epic adventures full of whale hunts, profitable captures, storms, shortages, and shipwreck-like hardships, all played for wild comic effect. When he reaches a fearful but oddly civilized tribe of "savages," their chief submits in terror, only for Boldheart to discover a Latin grammar master about to be cooked and force him to renounce his abuses and give boys' exercises for free. He then scatters the islanders with a devastating broadside, rescues the blustering William Boozey and turns him into a loyal admirer, defeats the long-hunted Latin master in a spectacular naval clash, and maroons him with a final sting of sarcasm. Boldheart's journey continues with a jesting marriage to a king's daughter and a shower of gold, jewels, ivory, and sandalwood, as Dickens gleefully satirizes authority, pedantry, and pirate tales.
