In the bleak household of an old aristocratic estate, Ivan Turgenev introduces Gerasim, a deaf and mute peasant whose immense strength, discipline, and quiet authority make him both feared and respected in Moscow. Uprooted from rural life, he remains inwardly bound to simplicity and labor, yet his silence gives him a dignity that deepens into loneliness. When the mistress arranges a marriage between the drunken, self-important shoemaker Kapiton and the meek laundress Tatiana, the servants' world tightens around arbitrary power, humiliation, and fear. Gerasim's fierce, wordless devotion to Tatiana becomes the emotional center of the story, but he is tricked into accepting her loss. A year later, as Tatiana departs with Kapiton, Gerasim rescues a struggling puppy from the mud and raises it into Mumu, a beloved spaniel who becomes his loyal companion and rare source of comfort. The surrounding tale of Silvio's delayed revenge and the narrator's isolated village life extends the book's themes of pride, obsession, loneliness, and the unsettling force of fate.
