In this sharp-witted comedy of debt and deception, Mercadet presides over a household balanced on the edge of ruin, where servants gossip about creditors, failed schemes, and the desperate hope of rescuing the family through his daughter Julie's marriage. With dazzling confidence, he turns insolvency into performance, flattering creditors, manufacturing rumors, and treating finance as a game of appearances in which honesty is a liability. His speeches argue that modern society worships credit and money above virtue, family, or honor, and he uses that logic to keep his world from collapsing. But Julie's heart belongs to Minard, her father's under-clerk, and their sincere love collides with Mercadet's mercenary plans for a wealthy match. As creditors press harder and social pressure mounts, Mercadet tests Minard, threatens him with the family's mountain of debts, and tries to force a breakup. Yet Minard's devotion only deepens, and Julie's resistance exposes the human cost behind Mercadet's comic manipulations. Fast, satirical, and emotionally charged, the play is a lively portrait of speculation, marriage as rescue, and the fragile line between survival and self-deception.
