In a birch grove washed in autumn light, rain, silence, and shifting shadows create a mood of quiet expectancy as a hunter-narrator drifts into sleep and awakens to a scene of tender unease. A young peasant girl, Akulina, sits alone in the forest with flowers in her hand, listening for the footsteps of someone she loves. Her tears and restless hope give the moment a fragile, heartbreaking stillness. When the man finally appears, he is a stylish, self-important valet whose polished manner quickly reveals his coldness. He speaks lightly of leaving soon and tells Akulina to stop crying, while she begs not to be forgotten and struggles to hold onto him. Their brief meeting exposes a sharp divide of class, power, and feeling: her devotion is sincere, while his affection seems shallow, evasive, and cruelly detached. Set against the natural beauty of the forest, the encounter becomes a poignant study of longing, betrayal, and emotional imbalance.
