Description & Overview
The Last Man is an ambitious science-fiction and apocalyptic novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley that explores friendship, love, political change, human mortality, and the devastating consequences of a global plague. Set largely in the late twenty-first century, the novel imagines a future world in which humanity is gradually destroyed by a mysterious epidemic.
The story follows Lionel Verney, who narrates the collapse of civilization and eventually becomes the last surviving human being. Lionel begins life as a wild and uneducated young man but gradually develops into a thoughtful and responsible individual. His closest relationships are with Adrian, Earl of Windsor; Raymond, a charismatic and ambitious military leader; and the strong-willed and intelligent Perdita and Idris.
As the plague spreads across Europe and eventually throughout the world, governments collapse, populations flee, and communities are destroyed. The characters attempt to preserve friendship, love, and human dignity while facing the certainty of death. Their personal tragedies mirror the larger destruction of civilization.
Shelley combines apocalyptic fiction with philosophical reflection and Romantic themes. The novel questions political power, human progress, scientific optimism, and the permanence of civilization. It also explores grief and the emotional consequences of losing those closest to us.
Through Lionel’s lonely survival, The Last Man presents a haunting meditation on humanity’s fragility and the possibility that even the greatest achievements of civilization may ultimately disappear.
