Anthony Trollope's Christmas farce begins in a bitter Paris winter, where slush, sleet, and a cramped hotel room mirror the strain between Mr. and Mrs. Brown, an affectionate but wildly mismatched couple bound for a grand Thompson family Christmas at Thompson Hall. Mrs. Brown, practical, energetic, and fiercely dutiful, is determined to press on despite her husband Charles's theatrical complaints that his throat and chest cannot survive the journey. What should be a simple holiday trip becomes a comic study of marriage, pride, and endurance as she tries to protect both family tradition and her husband's fragile comfort. When Charles demands mustard as a remedy, Mrs. Brown sets out through the Grand Hôtel's maze of corridors, only to become lost in the dark and drawn into a series of escalating misunderstandings. Her determination and dignity are tested as she charms a porter, retrieves the mustard, and returns with candle in hand, only to commit a disastrous mistake: she applies the plaster to the wrong bed and accidentally alters a sleeping stranger's beard. Panic, guilt, and social embarrassment drive the rest of the night as she struggles to hide the truth, escape the hotel, and get Charles moving before the porter or the injured stranger can expose her.
