Description & Overview
Great Expectations is a classic coming-of-age novel by Charles Dickens that explores ambition, social class, love, guilt, identity, and moral growth. The story follows Pip, an orphaned boy raised by his harsh older sister and her kind husband, Joe Gargery, a village blacksmith. Pip’s life changes after he secretly helps an escaped convict named Abel Magwitch.
Later, Pip is invited to the mysterious home of the wealthy Miss Havisham, where he meets her beautiful but emotionally damaged adopted daughter, Estella. Pip falls deeply in love with Estella and becomes ashamed of his humble background. He dreams of becoming a gentleman so that he might one day be worthy of her.
Unexpectedly, Pip receives a fortune from an unknown benefactor and moves to London to become a gentleman. He assumes Miss Havisham is secretly funding him, but the truth is far more complicated. His newfound wealth and social position gradually distance him from Joe and from the values that once shaped his character.
When Pip discovers the real source of his fortune, his understanding of his own life is shattered. Through suffering, loss, and self-reflection, he learns that wealth and social status do not determine a person’s worth.
Dickens combines humor, suspense, vivid characterization, and social criticism to portray Pip’s transformation from an ambitious boy into a more compassionate and morally aware man.
