You are holding this book because you know something the people around you may never fully understand, which is that addiction is a fight for your life that happens an hour at a time. You know what it is to wake up with a plan and be overtaken by a craving by noon, and you know the particular loneliness of fighting something in secret. You may have prayed desperate prayers in parking lots, and you may have promised God 100 times that this would be the last time. However you arrived here, the fact that you are still reaching for something spiritual tells you something important: the reaching itself is a seed, and this book is going to help you water it.
This is not a magic formula, and no arrangement of verses will erase an addiction by the end of the month. It is a 12-month devotional with 180 verses, 1 for each step of the journey, and each reading includes a reflection, a prayer prompt, and journaling space. The book will not tell you to pray away a medical condition, and it will not shame you for needing doctors, counselors, medication, or a 12-step meeting. It will give you verses to stand on.
Inside, you'll discover:
• A rhythm for surrender, grace, and renewing your mind
• The HALT check for hunger, anger, loneliness, and tiredness
• Scripture for the moments of temptation and craving
• The way of escape that is always made available
• How to find community that holds you up
• A daily practice that survives your worst day
• The freedom that lasts long after month 12
You will fail at this more than once, and that failure is not the end of your story, because the God of the Bible specializes in people who fall and return. This book is not asking for perfection, and it is asking for return. If you are in the middle of active addiction, get professional help first, and let this book be here when you come back.
