Description & Overview

Earth, 2050. Humanity has learned to travel through portals to distant worlds. But some destinations are not discovered. They are chosen.

Major Elizabeth Kane and her four-person exploration team have completed another routine mission when an unexpected message arrives from the mysterious Cords, the unknown intelligence responsible for humanity's portal network.

A Planetloc appears in their secure system.

The destination is a world that does not exist in any human database.

The message is simple:

YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN.

Kane, Professor Amelia Hart, Dr Maya Singh, Captain Sheldon Ross and Lieutenant Sarah Bennett step through the portal expecting another scientific expedition. Instead, they arrive on Veyra—a beautiful, Earth-like world untouched by the industrial development they know.

And they are not the first visitors.

The Veyrans have been expecting them.

There is only one condition for entering their settlement: the explorers must remove their clothing.

For Kane, the request is an immediate challenge to authority, identity and everything she has been taught about professionalism and control. For the others, it raises different questions. Why do the Veyrans regard the human body without embarrassment? Why does a society with little visible technology possess such sophisticated knowledge? And why do they seem to know so much about the Cords?

As the five explorers begin to cross the boundary between visitor and participant, each discovers that Veyra challenges more than their understanding of an alien civilisation.

The Veyrans have records of other travellers who arrived through the portals generations ago. Some returned home. Others stayed and became part of Veyran society. One disappeared into the mountains searching for the place where the Cords began.

Then the explorers discover ancient carvings depicting five visitors.

Five figures.

Just like them.

The discovery forces Kane and her team to question why they were sent to Veyra—and whether their journey is really an exploration mission at all.

As the mystery of the Cords deepens, so does the transformation of the explorers themselves. Technology, authority, security, medicine, history and even the meaning of the human body begin to look different through Veyran eyes.

And when the portal to Earth finally opens again, the team faces a choice they never expected to make:

Go home—or discover who they might become if they stay.

Beyond the Veil is a thought-provoking science-fiction story of first contact, exploration, mystery and personal freedom, where the greatest discoveries may not be found on another planet, but within ourselves.
