This episode recounts Liu Bei's arrival at Jingzhou to seek refuge under Liu Biao, where he received generous hospitality. Liu Biao's second wife, Lady Cai, and his brother-in-law Cai Mao grew suspicious of Liu Bei. They devised a plot to frame him, taking advantage of Liu Biao's illness to invite Liu Bei to a banquet where they prepared ambush troops to assassinate him. Upon receiving the warning, Liu Bei fled alone on horseback through the west gate, leaping across the Tanxi River—spanning several zhang—and narrowly escaped with his life.
