This episode narrates Zhuge Liang reformed the military system, dividing the Hanzhong troops into two shifts to conserve strength through rotational deployment. He entrusted the Central Protector—General Li Yan with supplying military provisions, then personally led his forces on fifth campaign against Qishan Mountain. Disguised as supernatural beings, he bewildered the Wei army, seized the wheat harvest in Longshan, and secured a military advantage. Unexpectedly, Li Yan, fearing punishment for insufficient provisions, fabricated news of Wu forces invading Shu and sent an urgent distress signal to the Qishan Mountain headquarters. Zhuge Liang employed an ambush tactic to kill the renowned Wei general Zhang He. The entire Shu army retreated to Hanzhong. Upon discovering Li Yan's false report, Zhuge Liang had him executed according to the law. He then learned that Li Yan's son, Li Feng, possessed considerable talent and promptly appointed him as his Chief Administrative Secretary. Zhuge Liang then resumed training his troops and stockpiling grain, biding his time for another opportunity to attack Wei.
