This episode recounts Lv Meng of Eastern Wu exploiting Jingzhou's vulnerability by hiding his troops in merchant ships to secretly cross the Yangtze River. They launched a surprise attack on the beacon towers and seized Jingzhou City. Upon receiving the news, Guan Yu returned to defend it but was caught in a pincer movement by Sun Quan and Cao Cao's forces. His troops lost morale and retreated in defeat to Maicheng. With supplies exhausted at Maicheng, Guan Yu attempted a nighttime breakout but fell into an ambush and was killed. Thus, Jingzhou came under Eastern Wu's control.
