The complete, uncut text of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, annotated by someone who has questions.

Ellis Keen's commentary runs throughout the novel, chapter by chapter, like a smart friend reading over your shoulder who has met this town before.Hester Prynne wears her shame on her chest and survives it.

The man who shares it keeps his hidden, and it hollows him out.

Hawthorne wrote that in 1850, about the 1640s. Since then, the technology has gotten faster. The math has not changed.

This edition contains:• The case that the town needed a sinner more than Hester ever needed forgiveness

• A husband who arrives home just in time for the sentencing, and decides, slowly and on purpose, to become something else
• Pearl, raised inside the shame and immune to it, reading the letter as a fact instead of a verdict
• A minister so adored that Boston has never asked a follow-up question
• The Custom-House opening every syllabus skips, and why it belongs at the front of the book

The scandal. The horror story. The revenge that looks like kindness. It is all three, and the town got the verdict backwards.

Questionable Classics. The books you were assigned. The commentary you deserved. Next up: Frankenstein* and Hamlet*.
