This episode mainly tells how Gao Qiu received news of Gao Lian's death and submitted a memorial to the throne. The imperial court then dispatched Huyan Zhuo to attack Liangshan, and the Liangshan forces were defeated by the Chain-Linked Cavalry. Tang Long knew that hook-sickled spears could break the Chain-Linked Cavalry formation, so Wu Yong sent Shi Qian and Tang Long to trick Xu Ning into coming to Liangshan. Shi Qian stole the Xu family's ancestral suit of armor, and Xu Ning followed the trail of the stolen armor to Liangshan, where he taught the Liangshan fighters how to use hook-sickled spears. In the end, Liangshan broke the Chain-Linked Cavalry formation, annihilated Huyan Zhuo's army, and forced him to flee in panic.
