Description & Overview

On July 26, 1848, a former police officer and carter from a coastal village was consecrated King of Kandy at one of the most ancient sacred temples in the Sinhalese Buddhist world. Within two days, thousands of highland farmers were marching on the nearest British colonial administrative centre, armed with spears, axes, and the tools of their agricultural lives. Within three days, two hundred of them were dead.

The Matale Rebellion of 1848 was the last act of Kandyan monarchical resistance against British colonial rule in Ceylon — and the first fully subaltern uprising, led not by the hereditary aristocracy but by the communities the plantation economy had been systematically dismantling for a decade. Igor Gifford reconstructs it in full: the land enclosures and tax impositions that drove a farming community to breaking point, the ancient political theology that gave their march its vocabulary, the burning of the tax registers and the firing squads at Bogambara Lake, and the parliamentary inquiry that forced the British establishment to confront the violence behind the coffee in its morning cup.

This is the story of what colonial power looks like when it is directly challenged — and what it costs the people who do the challenging.
