For five centuries, the songs of Surdas have carried the love of Krishna into the hearts of millions. Composed in the sixteenth century by a blind poet-saint of the Braj region, the Sursagar — the 'Ocean of Surdas' — gathers hundreds of devotional verses that trace the divine play from Krishna's birth in Gokul to the longing of the gopis and the soul's own thirst for God. This modern-English edition renders Surdas's Braj Bhasha songs in clear, inviting language that preserves the warmth, playfulness, and aching devotion of the original. Here are the butter thief of Gokul, the call of the flute, the circle dance of the Rasa Lila, and the ache of separation — all unfolded for today's reader. Faithful to the meaning and spirit of the classic, this edition includes an introduction, notes, and a glossary to guide you through the world of the poems. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
