During the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, Gao Qiu, a former hanger-on, was appointed Grand Commandant of the Palace Command. Gao Qiu immediately abused his power and lorded it over others. To settle an old personal grudge, he persecuted Wang Jin, an instructor of the Imperial Guards. Wang Jin had no choice but to flee the capital. Passing through Shi Village in Huayin County, Wang Jin took Shi Jin, the Nine-Tattooed Dragon, the son of Squire Shi, as his disciple and trained him in the martial arts. Only then did he continue to Yan'an Prefecture to seek service under the senior Commissioner Zhong. After Wang Jin left, Shi Jin became acquainted with Zhu Wu, Yang Chun, and Chen Da, the chieftains of the outlaws on Shaohua Mountain. Soon someone informed the authorities, and Huayin County sent troops to surround and capture them when the three came to enjoy the moon at Shi Manor during the Mid-Autumn Festival. To protect his outlaw friends, Shi Jin resolutely burned down his own manor, fought his way out of the siege, and made his way to Shaohua Mountain. A few days later, Shi Jin left the mountain and went to Yan'an Prefecture in search of his master Wang Jin.
