The Devaram Hymns of the Nayanars are among the earliest and most beloved expressions of Hindu bhakti, or devotional love. Composed in Tamil between the seventh and ninth centuries by three poet-saints — Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar — these songs praise Shiva at his many sacred shrines, celebrate the power of grace, and speak with startling intimacy of the soul's longing for God. This new edition renders the hymns in clear, present-day English while remaining faithful to the spirit and meaning of the originals. An introduction places the poets in their world, and appendices offer a glossary, key passages, and guidance for reading. Whether you come as a seeker, a student of world spirituality, or a lover of sacred poetry, these ancient songs speak with a freshness that transcends time and place.
