For nearly two thousand years, the Orphic Hymns have been a wellspring of Western spiritual poetry — eighty-seven invocations to the gods, goddesses, and cosmic powers of the ancient Greek world, from Hecate at the threshold to the Sun, the Moon, the Sea, and the stars. Attributed to the legendary musician Orpheus, these hymns were sung in mystery rites meant to purify the soul and awaken its divine origin. This new edition renders them in clear, present-day English that preserves the beauty, reverence, and rhythmic power of the originals while making them fully accessible to modern readers. Whether you come to them for their poetry, their history, or their spiritual depth, these hymns offer a rare window into how our ancestors addressed the divine. Faithful to the meaning and spirit of the ancient text, this is the Orphic Hymns as they have never been presented before. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
