THE FOUNDING OF THE WORLD HAS A HOLE IN IT.
The instrument that sold the light of the northern sky — the contract that eight hundred years of law, debt and empire have been built on top of — was never witnessed.
Under its own terms it required a licensed scribe’s hand at that table. There was none. Which makes it voidable. Which means any party with standing can pull it down, and everything resting on it with it: every indenture, every shelter, every treaty keeping ten thousand people alive.
There is exactly one person alive who can cure it.
Wren Halloran has three winters of her own life left to pay, and a retainer on her desk from a party that has never lied, never threatened, and never taken anything it was not given. It has been waiting eight hundred years for her signature.
The retainer is dated before she was born. It does not name her. It names an office — the scribe of the ninth seat — and the space for that office was ruled, and left blank, and quietly paid for, nine generations before she ever picked up a pen.
If she witnesses, eight hundred years of theft become permanent and beyond challenge for ever.
If she refuses, the law that houses ten thousand people comes apart in her hands.
And the man she loves — stateless, titled nothing, with nothing left in the world to lose — has already lodged the challenge to bring the whole thing down.
He is not wrong.
That is the worst part.
