Twelve year old Wayne is a brave, curious and God-fearing boy who lives in a small village near Manchester with his parents and his seven-year-old sister, Kate. Wayne loves fairy tales, especially the stories his father tells him at bedtime. One evening, his father tells him about a mysterious castle near the Golden River. Long ago, a powerful wizard lived there and, before his death, placed a magical curse on the castle. Anyone who enters must solve the mysteries hidden inside or be transformed into a frog.
Fascinated by the story, Wayne tells his school friends, George and Melony. Together, they seek information from their history teacher, who confirms the frightening legend. Rather than being discouraged, Wayne decides to investigate the castle with his friends, believing that courage, faith and determination can overcome difficult challenges.
During their school holidays, the three friends travel to the castle. Once inside, the door mysteriously locks behind them. They discover a book called The Mystery, which reveals that they must solve three difficult situations before they can escape.
Their first challenge takes them to a village in Liverpool, where they must bring together Terry, a humble young man, and a princess who do not know each other.
The second challenge transports the friends to a village in India where innocent villagers are being oppressed by a powerful Zamindar.
The final challenge takes them to New York, where they meet Ted, a talented but struggling musician. Wayne believes in Ted's talent and helps him organize a musical performance and promote his music.
The adventure teaches Wayne and his friends that faith, courage, friendship, determination and unity can help overcome even the most difficult challenges. Wayne returns home having discovered that the greatest magic is not found in the castle, but in believing that good can triumph over fear and adversity.
