Description & Overview

In the final years of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar's enemies are gathering beyond the reach of his legions-and some of them command powers older than Rome itself.

A young boy has spent his life hiding a terrifying gift: he sees fragments of events before they happen. His visions arrive without warning, revealing bloodshed, betrayal, and death, but never enough to show him how to prevent them. When his uncle discovers the truth, the boy is taken from his home and delivered into the service of the Speculatores, Rome's secret network of scouts, spies, and assassins.

His abilities earn him a place within Speculatores Noctis, an elite four-man detachment created to investigate threats ordinary soldiers cannot understand. Operating under sealed orders and reporting directly to Caesar, the unit travels wherever Rome's authority is weakest-isolated villages, rebellious provinces, forgotten temples, and military camps where men vanish without explanation.

Their latest assignment begins with a slaughter. Roman soldiers have been found arranged around a burned altar, their bodies marked with symbols that predate the Republic. Witnesses speak of women moving through the darkness, voices carried on windless nights, and dead men whispering the names of those who will die next. Caesar believes his political enemies have formed an alliance with a hidden circle of witches capable of turning fear, disease, and prophecy into weapons of war.

As the Speculatores Noctis follows a trail of ritual killings, forbidden texts, and corrupted officials, the boy's visions grow stronger. He sees Caesar surrounded by blood. He sees Rome burning beneath a blackened sky. Most frightening of all, he sees himself standing beside the people he has been ordered to destroy.

The deeper the unit travels into the conspiracy, the less certain its members become about whom they can trust. Someone within Caesar's command is protecting the witches, warning them whenever the hunters draw near. Every victory leads to another carefully prepared trap, and every captured enemy seems to know more about the boy than he knows about himself.

The witches claim his gift is not a blessing from the gods but the return of an ancient power Rome tried to erase. They insist his recruitment was foretold long before his birth-and that Caesar does not intend to protect him. He intends to control him.

Caught between the ruthless ambitions of Rome and a supernatural enemy that may understand his destiny, the boy must determine whether his visions are warnings of the future or instructions leading him toward it. If he chooses incorrectly, Caesar will lose more than a battle. Rome itself may become the sacrifice in a ritual centuries in the making.

Speculatores Noctis: The Eyes of Caesar is a dark historical fantasy of Roman espionage, forbidden witchcraft, military intrigue, betrayal, and the terrible burden of knowing what comes next.
