The year is 7159 AD. The Hegemony conflict is a fading memory. The massive sentient starship Kai is transforming from a stripped-down tactical zone into a warm, floating neighborhood. Mission Coordinator MoTif spent three years holding her chosen family together through the dark. Now, her biggest challenge is untangling holiday decorations and surviving the Festival of the Long Night.

Help arrives in an unexpected form. The Avatar of Ma'at is a mortal construct built to mirror a cosmic deity of justice. She is brilliant, regal, and intimidating. She is also surprisingly terrible at ice skating. As the ship's crew trades emergency rations for spiced cider and bubblegum bread, MoTif realizes the fighting is truly done. It is safe to rest. It is safe to hold someone's hand.

The Festival of the Long Night is a feel-good science fiction romance. It trades deep-space battles for community building. There are rogue cleaning drones, slippery ice rinks, and minor culinary disasters, but the light wins. Everything turns out fine.
