Description & Overview
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. But more than 200 years after its first publication, its language can make the original unnecessarily difficult for modern readers. Victorian vocabulary, unfamiliar sentence structures, and expressions that have long disappeared from everyday English can get between the reader and the story.
This edition removes that barrier without simplifying the novel.
The complete 1818 text has been carefully adapted into modern American English, replacing archaic words and constructions with natural contemporary language. Unfamiliar word order and formulations such as “said she” are modernized where appropriate, while Shelley's story, characters, atmosphere, and meaning remain intact.
