Description & Overview

The Turn of the Screw is a haunting Gothic novella by Henry James that explores fear, innocence, secrecy, and the uncertain boundary between reality and imagination. The story follows an unnamed young governess who is hired to care for two children, Miles and Flora, at the isolated country estate of Bly. Their uncle, their guardian, gives her strict instructions never to trouble him with household problems.

At first, the children appear charming and well behaved, but the governess soon notices strange events around the estate. She begins seeing mysterious figures whom she believes are the ghosts of Peter Quint, a former servant, and Miss Jessel, a former governess. Convinced that the spirits are attempting to influence the children, she becomes increasingly determined to protect them.

As the story progresses, the governess’s fear and suspicion intensify. The children’s behavior becomes increasingly ambiguous, and it becomes difficult to determine whether the supernatural events are genuinely occurring or are products of the governess’s troubled perception. James deliberately leaves the truth uncertain, allowing multiple interpretations of the story.

Through psychological tension and Gothic atmosphere, the novella examines repression, obsession, childhood innocence, authority, and the dangers of interpreting ambiguous events. Its unresolved ending and psychological complexity have made The Turn of the Screw one of the most discussed ghost stories in English literature.
