Description & Overview

The Time Machine is a pioneering science-fiction novel by H. G. Wells that explores time travel, human evolution, social inequality, and the distant future. The story follows an unnamed inventor known as the Time Traveller, who develops a machine capable of moving through time. During an experiment, he travels far into the future and discovers a radically transformed Earth.

In the year 802,701, humanity has evolved into two distinct species: the gentle, childlike Eloi, who live above ground in apparent comfort, and the terrifying Morlocks, who inhabit underground industrial spaces. The Time Traveller initially believes that the Eloi represent the peaceful future of humanity, but he soon discovers a much darker relationship between the two species.

As he explores this strange future, he struggles to recover his stolen time machine and encounters evidence suggesting that human civilization has been shaped by centuries of social division and economic inequality. His journey eventually carries him even farther into the future, where he witnesses the Earth's distant and unsettling fate.

Combining adventure with social commentary, Wells uses time travel to examine class conflict, technological progress, evolution, and the possible consequences of inequality. The Time Machine remains a foundational work of science fiction and one of the earliest major novels to treat time travel as a central literary idea.
