In the rough-and-ready town of Piperock, Ike Harper and Dirty Shirt Jones stumble into a frontier uproar where ghostly messages, bad judgment, and outright violence all feed the same comic frenzy. What begins with Sheriff Scenery Sims, merchant Wick Smith, and a burro-triggered mishap soon grows into a townwide obsession with the dead, as Magpie Simpkins, Buck Masterson, and Judge Steele turn a Ouija board into a civic enterprise. When "Revelation Night" is advertised as a public chance to question the departed, skepticism and superstition collide in a packed hall of cowhands, merchants, and troublemakers. The séance quickly descends into farce. The spirit answering the board is repeatedly identified as Hard-Pan Hawkins, a notorious liar and horse-thief, prompting accusations, mockery, and old grievances over stolen cattle, saddles, and missing wives. As the crowd bickers and brawls, the event becomes less a spiritual communion than a rowdy frontier free-for-all. In the end, the town's haunting mystery proves to be just another hard-handed joke, with the "ghost" revealed as a very real return from Hard-Pan Hawkins himself.
