A sequel written by another hand entirely: Monte Cristo's daughter grown, the old scores of the Count's revenge still bleeding, and Paris and Rome still full of people who remember. Flagg was an American consul in Venice and a working journalist, and this is the strangest kind of literary artefact — the Victorian appetite for more of a story, satisfied by the wrong author.
