Description & Overview

Earthquakes represent one of the most significant natural hazards affecting buildings and infrastructure in high-risk seismic regions. While the structural frame of a building is designed to resist earthquake forces, the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems installed within that building can remain highly vulnerable if they are not properly anchored, supported, braced, and coordinated.
A building may survive a major earthquake while its essential services suffer severe damage. Air-handling units may shift from their foundations, pumps may become disconnected, piping may rupture, ducts may collapse, cable trays may fail, electrical equipment may overturn, and fire protection systems may become impaired. In critical facilities, such failures can result in consequences far beyond the direct cost of repairing damaged equipment. Hospitals may lose essential services, data centers may experience outages, airports may face operational disruption, industrial plants may shut down, and emergency facilities may become partially or completely unavailable when they are needed most.
The seismic performance of MEP systems is therefore not simply a matter of protecting equipment. It is an important part of protecting people, maintaining life-safety functions, reducing property damage, and improving the ability of a facility to continue operating or recover rapidly after an earthquake.
This book provides a practical introduction to the seismic design requirements and installation principles applicable to MEP equipment and distribution systems in high-risk earthquake zones. Its purpose is not to replace the applicable building code, seismic standard, structural engineer, or specialist designer. Instead, it is intended to help engineers, contractors, inspectors, facility managers, and project teams understand the fundamental principles that should guide the seismic protection of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and related building services.
The focus of this book is deliberately practical. Rather than concentrating on complex calculations and formulas, it examines the engineering concepts behind seismic anchorage, restraint, bracing, flexible connections, movement accommodation, equipment support, coordination, inspection, and quality assurance.
A successful seismic installation depends on more than selecting an anchor or adding a brace. The entire load path must be understood. Equipment must be connected to an appropriate supporting structure. Suspended piping, ductwork, and cable containment systems must be restrained so that they can resist movement in multiple directions. Connections must accommodate building movement where necessary. Different MEP services must be coordinated to avoid conflicts between seismic braces and other building systems. Finally, the installation must be inspected to ensure that the design intent has actually been achieved in the field.
